The name EKN – pronounced “i'kin” – comes from Turkish and means something like “seed” or “seed,” and so the brand’s philosophy can be understood as planting good ideas in the hope that something great and lasting will grow from them.

EKN shoes are manufactured in Portugal near the city of Porto – many of them by hand. Around 70 people work in the factory there, and great importance is placed on good and fair working conditions. Recycled materials and natural raw materials from organic farming are used wherever possible in production. Materials such as organic cotton, cork, and recycled plastics are used.

The boxes the shoes come in are made of recycled paper, and the logistics are handled in a CO²-neutral manner. The office in Frankfurt, Germany, also consistently avoids nuclear power, non-recycled paper, and conventional cleaning products. EKN strives for sustainability wherever possible. The fact that this is still far from a given only demonstrates how necessary it still is.
